Hi everybody. Manufacturers Fastener World has announced they are going out of business by the end of 2010. They’ve always seemed like nice folks, so let’s all take a few minutes to review their online stock listing and look for items we can take off their hands.

Plafkin Brothers and its Division the Grand Rapids Bolt And Nut Company has been around since Henry Idema owned Manufacturers Supply on Commerce. We were the first in the Grand Rapids area to accummulate a substantial amount of Surplus inventory; then we helped Solar Screw Company in Addision, Ill. gain a foothold in this community by producing for Steelcase, American Seating, Irwin Seating, Grand Rapids Brass and many other industries in our area. Plafkin Brothers bought and sold to industry, and started in 1936 as the Inter City Bottle and Carton Supply.

Plafkin Brothers and its Division The Grand Rapids Bolt and Nut Company were able to prosper because of the establishment of “Surplus Outlets” which enabled the Plafkin Family to always have enough resources to pay its bills, even though industrial accounts could not always pay within 30 days. When we purchased a 10,000 sq ft pavilion, and a home, both on Doans Lake, 2 miles S. of Wayland, Michigan; also 87 acres across the highway with an oil well drilled by Lincoln Rock of Northbrook, Ill., 2800 ft of railsiding, and a 6000 sq ft pole building put up by Ed Hannenberg of Coopersville, Michigan, then we knew that we finally had a location large enough to accommodate all of the “Surplus” inventories that were offered to us. Because we were located between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan, we could draw from 100 miles around; currently the Indian Tribe-Gun Lake Tribe, and the Station Casinos in Las Vagas have put in the first $150,000,000 in a new casino just around the corner from the Wayland property which we purchased in 1962. Because Plafkin Brothers was started during the Depression of the 1930s, we were always aware that if one thing did not work, you had to try a different venue.

The Plafkin Family would consider purchasing surplus fastener inventories which would have been offered to Manufacturers Fastener World; Plafkin Brothers and its Division, The Grand Rapids Bolt and Nut Company started the fastener division by accumulating surplus fasteners; from that point on, they were asked if they could duplicate what companies had purchased from them-thus, began our affiliation with Solar Screw, Heads and Threads, Industrial Supply in Chicago, Chicago Threaded, Garden City Bolt, Champion Screw and many other manufacturers.
